Technical Scientific Committee

In May 2020, the company appointed a scientific technical committee to assist management with a focus on specific research and development projects. It works to facilitate the expansion of relationships and networking with the international scientific and academic community and with companies engaged in the same areas of activity as Arco FC. Our story

The company was founded in Bologna as Roen Est Srl in 1999 in collaboration with the ENEA, developing proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology. In 2003 the Arcotronics Nissei group acquired 60% of Roen Est, renaming it Arcotronics Fuel Cells. A new acquisition took place in 2007 when the Morphic group acquired 100% of Arcotronics FC and renamed it Morphic Exergy. In 2011 Morphic Exergy was relocated abroad. The company was then reconstituted in Italy in 2018 as Arco FC. With a view to growth, in 2022 Arco FC moves its headquarters to Boston United States under the name of Arco Technologies.

Several tens of millions of euros have been invested in research and development between 1999 and 2022 which represent the background of Intellectual Property (IP) now in the hands of Arco Technologies Inc.

The MEGA

In 2001 the company patented the MEGA Membrane Electrode Gasket Assembly (EP1241724A2).

This invention made a significant impact, making PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) production reliable and easily manufacturable, while making maintenance and refurbishing possible.

Residential Fuel Cells

Another one of Arco’s goals was to make fuel cells available to the average consumer in terms of cost, reliability, and safety. The Penta HC came on the market in 2005 and it could generate 5kW of electricity in total absence of noise thanks to the use of fuel cells.

The peculiarities of the Penta HC were that it was powered by natural gas (easily available by all domestic installations) and inside it our proprietary reformer (which generated hydrogen from natural gas) and a carbon cleanup system were integrated together with the fuel cell (production of blue hydrogen).

In April of 2010, the Max-e 3600 (12 VDC | 12Amp | 150 Watt maximum power), an extremely compact charger, was designed for the Recreational Vehicles sector. Arco developed a singular fuel for it: Hydronite (a chemical hydride fuel). Inside Max-e, the Hydronite reacted on a catalytic reactor designed ad hoc, generating pure hydrogen, which would then feed the system.

Max-e was a big hit in its niche and brought extremely sophisticated technology to everyone, at a competitive price.

The first heavy duty application

The first heavy duty application fuel cell module was developed between 2001 and 2002. In 2004, Arco provided a 20kW fuel cell module for “NEO”, the first European level industrial vehicle prototype for large scale and zero emissions people and material transportation. The vehicle was equipped with a 60kWh battery pack coupled with a fuel cell. It had a charge load capacity of 3600kg and had 350km autonomy.

Aerospace & Naval

In 2003, upon request from ASI, a O2 – H2  200Watt fuel cell stack was developed for stratospheric balloons.

From 2007 to 2011, with the collaboration of Environment Park and Azimut Benetti, the first 15kW APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) for naval applications was made and tested on field.

Material Handling

In 2008 the new heavy-duty stack generation was developed. These stacks aimed to increase power while lowering production costs. From the initiative was born MIRA6, a fully automated DC power module for APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) and for material handling.

This module turned out to be extremely efficient and is still being continuously evolved and produced, 14 years after its debut.

Now

Arco Technologies has significant know-how to produce a novel AEM (anion exchange membrane) electrolyzer based on proprietary CCM (catalyst coated membrane) formulation and stack design.

Who we are

Angelo D’Anzi

CEO & CTO

Angelo is an Italian entrepreneur co-founder of Arco Technologies Inc, a Fuel cell company located in US and in Italy.

Past founder of Arcotronics Fuel Cells (Arcotronics Nissei Group now Kemet Group NYSE: KEM).

With more than 23 years’ experience in the fuel cell and electrolyzer development, Angelo holds 18 WIPO patents in Vanadium Flow Batteries and Fuel Cells. He received the 2003 Sapio Award in the Energy and Transportation category with a paper titled “Technological Transfer between Research Institutions and Companies in the Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Technology.

Angelo has also founder and director of Storen technologies Inc, a Vanadium flow battery company since the inception in January 2017 in New York State and is primarily responsible for the technology transfer.

Angelo has a mechanical engineering background and holds an MBA degree from the LUISS Business School in Rome

Andrea Raggi

COO and Business development manager

MD in Mechanical engineering at University of Pisa, Executive Master in entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University – Doha Campus, Executive Master in International Business Leadership at University of Genova.

Andrea has a background spanning from automotive industry to redox flow batteries to composite material and electronic systems for defense and marine applications.

He has been part of Arco Scientific Advisory Board from 2020 to 2022.

Davide Biggi

CFO

Davide Biggi graduated with honors from the University of Pisa in Corporate Finance and Financial Markets; with 15 years of work experience he has acquired specific skills in financial planning and management starting from the drafting of the annual budget to the reporting period for management. His skills include treasury management, corporate tax planning and management and the auditing of medium-sized companies up to the drawing up of the Annual Report.

Biggi has specialized in the drafting of business plans for the raising of capital (equity and debt) with numerous successful operations – and also in the preparation of financial plans for Facilitated Finance for the collection of European public funds.

He has covered the role of responsible administrative and accounting for a medium-sized multinational group in the naval field located in Europe and USA – and the role of independent financial analyst designated to raising of capital of small and medium-sized companies. He has held the role of CFO in two medium-sized companies in the field of shipping and energy.

Gianluca Piraccini

Senior Engineer

Gianluca Piraccini is a founder of Arco Fuel Cells in 2018 and plays the role of senior engineer. He has been part of the Arco team since 2008 as a mechanical engineer at Arcotronics Fuel Cells. His responsibilities have included research and development, mechanical design, development, and industrialization of the product and of the technological process.

Dr. Gianluca Piraccini completed his master’s degree in mechanical engineering with honors at the Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna, and in 2003 he completed a PhD in design and methods of industrial engineering. In 2006 he participated in the international research project for the design of the Center for International Cooperation in Long Pipe Experiments (CICLoPE), a research laboratory that allows the best measurements in the world for turbulent flows in pipes.

Dr. Piraccini has a decade of experience in mechanical and fluid dynamic design in the field of fuel cells and vanadium flow batteries, collaborating with both companies and universities.

Giovanni Cufalo

Development Manager: hydrogen generation and storage system

Mr. Cufalo works in Arco to coordinate the development of electrolyzes and hydrogen refueling stations.

Giovanni has more than 10 years of experience in mechanical and process design and in product industrialization processes. He has several experiences in the development of systems and equipments for Fuel Cells, Electrolysers for Hydrogen production and gas purification systems. He knows how to prepare the technical handbook in accordance with the standards for CE certification, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and Directive PED-2014/68/EU and also in compliance with the ATEX-2014/34/EU Directive. He has also experience in preparing technical dossiers in accordance with North American standards. He has experience as Project Manager in the definition and implementation of the executive project and in the development of project plans with budgets, activity planning and resource allocation.
